Westell WireSpeed Modem
Model A90- & B90-
Equipment Firmware Upgrade version 6.1.2
You are responsible for maintaining and properly installing the attached upgrade and for insuring that your system meets
all requirements for the software. You are also responsible for backing up any files or data on your computer prior to
installing this software and for any loss of data or functionality related to the use of this upgrade or software.
What is firmware?
Firmware is special-purpose, low-level software that serves two purposes. First, it enables a device (like the Westell
WireSpeed DSL modem) to take stock of its capabilities and functions. Second, it coordinates the activities of the device during
normal operation.
Firmware is stored in "read-only" memory (ROM) on the device. The user, during normal operation, cannot change the information
stored there.
Who should use this upgrade?
Any customer who has been determined to be in need of this upgrade by the Verizon Online Technical Support group, as well as any
customer who likes to have the latest upgrades on his equipment.
Which Westell Modems does this upgrade apply to?
The Westell WireSpeed DSL Modems with model numbers beginning with A90 and B90.
The Westell WireSpeed DSL Modems with model numbers beginning with C90 do not need this upgrade.
You can find the model number on the tag located on the bottom of the modem. (The complete model number will be something
similar to B90-36R515-01.) If your model number is different from the ones listed above, you should not attempt to use this
upgrade.
What Macintosh OS (Operating System) does this upgrade apply to?
This upgrade has been tested with the following Apple® Macintosh® Operating Systems:
8.6 - 9.0.4
You should not attempt to upgrade the Westell WireSpeed DSL Modem if you are not running one of the listed Operating Systems.
What does power-cycle mean?
When a device (like the Westell WireSpeed DSL modem) is turned off for a moment, and is then turned back on, this allows the
firmware to reset itself. This activity is called "power-cycle". (The power to the device is cycled from on to off,
and then back to on again.)
When the device is in the off section of a power-cycle, a period of 5 - 10 seconds is usually sufficient to allow the device's
firmware to reset itself.
Will my Verizon Online DSL service be impacted?
The upgrade interacts with the modem only, so your Verizon Online DSL service should continue to work as it always has.
How long will it take to upgrade my Westell WireSpeed DSL modem?
You should be able to complete the upgrade process in 10 - 15 minutes.
Installing the Westell Firmware Upgrade
NOTE: The following instructions presume that the Westell DSL modem is connected directly via the ethernet cable to the NIC
on your Macintosh, and that your Macintosh and the modem are both turned on.
Hub Users
If you use a hub, testing has shown that the software will upgrade the firmware on your Westell DSL modem. If you
encounter problems, you may need to connect a single computer directly to the DSL modem to perform this upgrade.
Router Users
If you use a network router such as the LinkSys BEFSR41 or BEFSR81, the 2Wire 100, or the Netgear MR314, you will need to
temporarily disconnect a Macintosh from the router and connect that Macintosh directly to the Westell DSL modem using the black
ethernet cable that was included with the unit when shipped until the upgrade is completed. After the modem has been upgraded,
you may reconnect your router. If there are any adapters attached to the modem, you should leave the adapters in place.
Steps to disconnecting and reconnecting a networked computer:
- Disconnect the ethernet cable between your Macintosh and the router from the NIC of your Macintosh
- Disconnect the ethernet cable between the router and the modem from the back of the router
- Connect the cable from the modem to the NIC of your Macintosh
- Run the upgrade (see the next section)
- Disconnect the cable from the modem to the NIC of your Macintosh
- Reconnect the cable from the modem to the back of the router
- Reconnect the cable from the router to the NIC of your Macintosh
- Restart your Macintosh
- Power-cycle your router and then your modem
Dynamic IP (PPPoE) customers must perform this upgrade while disconnected from the Internet. If you remain
connected, the upgrade process will not be able to proceed.
